Around Baikal in 11 days

Participants of an extreme trip covered 1.5 thousand km along the ice

In March the company “Grand Baikal” organized an 11-day trip on snowmobiles around Baikal for four fans of extreme tourism from Irkutsk, Pskov and St. Petersburg.

A caravan consisting of six Yamaha and Polaris snowmobiles started from Listvyanka on March, 13th. Two skilled instructors accompanied the tourists.

In five days travelers covered over 800 km along the southern and east coast of the lake along the route Listvyanka - Krugobaikalsky railway - Tankhoy - Enkhaluk - Gremyachinsk - Davsha - Severobaikalsk. After a one-day rest an the north most point of the route, the conquerors of icy lands started their way back (cape Zavorotny - Zama - Buguldeika - Listvyanka). Travelers covered from 150 to 220 km daily.

Expedition had good luck, it did without breakages and traumas, but nevertheless Baikal has tested extreme strength of tourists.

According to Dmitry Razumov from Irkutsk, on the fourth day of the trip between Gremyachinsk and Davsha the expedition entered a field of three meters high hummocks that lasted for many kilometers. It took snowmobiles 17 hours to get through the ice obstacle. They couldn’t get to the place of overnight stay before dark, so they had to move in the darkness. The temperature went down to minus 32°C, thus part of the way turned out to be a real struggle for survival.

“When we finally entered a warm premise, we could not remove our helmets for a long time, they got frozen to the jackets”, - Dmitry recollects with a smile. The way back turned out to be even more difficult due to a big number of cracks. At cape Zavorotny tourists helped to pull out an SUV, its front wheels went through the ice. In 11 days tourists have covered 1500 km.

Despite severe conditions all the participants of round-the-Baikal trip consider it unforgettable and full of bright impressions. Dmitry Razumov explained that he used to travel on snowmobiles before (in the northwest regions of the country), but his Baikal Odyssey is the best one. “My friends and I shall definitely recommend this trip to our acquaintances”, - remarked the traveler.
